The Chapter at Wittenberg University
This is the history of an illegitimate chapter. We have no record of the Chapter designation of the Wittenberg University chapter because it was illegitimately founded. It may have been chartered out of the South, and one also suspects that Adelbert/Case-Western Reserve may have issued charters as well. Last commencement some of the Wittenberg Greeks were fortunate enough to secure a chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon. As is perhaps well known this is a Sophomore fraternity, having its origin at Wesleyan, Middletown, Conn. It now comprises twenty-four chapters, principally scattered through the east. There are four chapters found in Ohio, viz.: Adelbert, Kenyon, Delaware and Wittenberg. It was laregly through the efforts of John W. H. Miller, ’97, and Dallas V. Halverstadt, ’97, that the charter was granted to Wittenberg. The charter members are : John W. H. Miller, D. V. Halverstadt, Harry F. Summers, Harry Purcell, James Turner, B. F. Heckert, A. P. Ludlow, C. E. Smith, Frank Baughman, Guy Bailey, Frank Shimp, Eugene Jeffries, Herbert Pontius and John Turner. Joe H. Myers, who was the first initiate, went through the mill on Friday night before commencement last year. After the initiation the boys banqueted at Adams’. The Wittenberger, September 29, 1896. This is the only reference to the Wittenberg Chapter, it may have only lived a year.
