The Theta Theta Chapter at West Virginia University.
The Theta Theta Chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon was founded on October 14, 1898. The Chapter had some lean years in the beginning, but grew to be a large & prosperous organization. The Chapter started off illegitimate, possibly a Pi-Omicron creation, but it was legitimized by the United National in 1912. The chapter was originally founded as the Mu Delta Chapter, but when legitimized it was renamed the Theta Theta Chapter. The Chapter was also supplied with its own coffin which must have been a handy item in any chapter room. The Chapter was a traditional one, and therefore was driven from the national in the 1913-16 Interfraternity Conflict. In 1917, it reorganized itself as the “West Virginia Alpha of Skull and Key”. In 1919, The Monticola noted of the annual Skull and Key dance, “Another interesting feature of society among University circles was the dance given by the Skull and Key Society on December 14. The Armory was elaborately decorated in colors and emblems of the Society. Refreshments were served and the couples danced until 12:30. Nossokoff Maggio’s Orchestra of Pittsburgh furnished the music. Those in charge of the dance were Jack Hagan, Russel Bailey, John Neidermyer, Chief Leidig and Jack Latterner.” Important research contributions to this article were made by John B. Kendrick.
