The Beta Chapter at Syracuse University.
The Beta Chapter was a strong and thriving chapter for many years. It was founded in 1872, and naturally was legitimate because it was founded by the Alpha Chapter. Syracuse University had a predecessor institution at Genessee College. Genessee was the next nearest Methodist academic institution, and was staffed by Wesleyan graduates. Syracuse’s first undergraduate year was in 1871-72, and apparently there was seen an urgent need to have a chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon. So much so, that it seems the urgent need to issue a charter to Syracuse was what made the Alpha Chapter seperate from Skull & Keys. The Beta Chapter was immediately successful, although the Chapter was condemned by the Syracuse faculty, (for what failing is unknown), in November 1890, and the members were barred from all college honors. That setback was temporary, and good relations were quickly restored. Thee members also excelled at spreading chapters east and west across central New York to Rochester, Troy, Schnectady, Ithaca, Hamilton, & c. The Beta Chapter was driven from the society in the 1913-16 Interfraternity Conflict, and the Beta Chapter continued as a strong entity. It remained a strong traditional chapter and was a part of the N. P. of T. N. E. chapters in the 1925 split. Last known, ca. 1925.
